Summer B
Week 5

Poppy class had a fantastic visit to Northumberland Zoo on Thursday. The children enjoyed exploring the zoo and looking at all the animals and birds, including the owl display. In maths we have been continuing to focus on number facts to ten, recording calculations to match the ten grids. On Wednesday we watched the Rock Steady bands sing and play in front of the whole school.
Stars of the week

This weeks stars of the week are:
Mohammad Alabdullah for his progress in school.
Thomas Craig for progress in his writing.
Week 4
It has been another busy week in class this week and the children have coped extremely well with the hot weather. In class we have been writing some super sentences about the animals they might see at the zoo. In maths we have been recapping our number facts to 5 and recording the number calculation.
Stars of the week

Amelia Telfer for always demonstrating respect in school.
Eleanor Ayre for a fantastic understanding of the world.
Week 3
Farmer Duck
We listened to the story of poor "Farmer Duck" by Martin Waddell. He works hard on a farm all day and all night, while the Lazy Farmer lies in bed and eats chocolate. However, by the end of the story the Lazy Farmer gets his comeuppance when the other farm animals decide to teach him a lesson! Taking inspiration from the story we learned about farm animals, jobs on the farm, animals homes and mother and baby animals.

Bigger and Smaller
This week we have ben comparing bigger and smaller numbers using the rekenreks. The children were shown a number and they then used the rekenrek to show either a smaller or bigger number using the one finger one push method.

Stars of the Week!
Our stars of the week this week are:
Chester for demonstrating our core value of respect.
Jaxon for being a maths wizard.
Week 2
The Three Billy Goats Gruff
Reception have been listening to different versions of the traditional tale "The Three Billy Goats Gruff". The children have drawn their own troll and described his features. We also worked in teams to design and build a safe way for the goats to cross the river. The children used their resilience and team work skills brilliantly to create some fantastic strong and practical ideas. Look at our amazing bridge models!
Rekenreks
This week the children have been introduced to rekenreks in maths. A rekenrek is similar to an abacus and we have been learning how to use it. Instead of counting each bead one by one, the children have been practising how to subitise by looking at a group of beads and knowing how many there are straight away. They have been putting their finger in the correct place and moving the beads across together to show the number. The children have picked this up so quickly and have already shown great confidence in just a couple of lessons!

Stars of the Week!
Our stars of the week this week are:
Mason for improvement in his letter formation.
Annamaria for progress in letter sound recognition.
Week 1

I Can Grow a Sunflower
Reception have been looking after their sunflower seeds over the last few weeks. We have been carefully watering our shoots and measuring how tall each plant is growing. The children used their maths skills to measure their sunflowers with cubes and recorded how tall they have grown. Next week we are hoping to take them home so the children can continue to look after them until they grow into beautiful sunflowers.
Measuring using Cubes
In class this week the children have been measuring objects with multilink cubes and comparing their heights identifying the tallest and the shortest. We have also been ordering pictures of sunflowers from shortest to tallest.
Flower Observational Drawings
The children enjoyed drawing flowers with pastels. They looked closely at the petal shapes and used what they noticed to show the size and colour of each flower.

Star of the Week!
Our star of the week is:
Lena for always working hard in class.
