‘A Stepping Stone into the Future’

Summer B

Blue Reception Class of 2023-24

Congratulations to all our Reception children for having such a successful year. It has been a pleasure to teach each and every one of them. I have loved watching them grow into confident and happy learners.  I will miss my lovely class and I am unbelievably proud of the resilience, hard work and progress they made.  I could not have wished for a better class!

Reception staff would also like to thank parents for all the generous end of year gifts.  Thank you!

  Party Time!

The children played party games to celebrate a fantastic year in Reception!

Week 7

 School Talent Show

Georgia, Penny, Amelia, Emily, Scarlett and Orobosa performed a cheerleader routine in our whole school talent show.

Week 6

Pedal Power!

We have made amazing progress in our cycling sessions.  This week we practised pedalling and steering our bikes around obstacles.

  Attendance Trophy

Amazing news for Blue Reception class!

We were presented with the attendance award this week for 98% attendance and best attendance in school by Mr MingStones.

Week 5

Northumberland Zoo

Miss Knowles' reception class had a wonderful time at Northumberland Zoo.  There were lots of different animals to see including wallabies, monkeys, meerkats and snow leopards.  The birds of prey put on a fantastic show, swooping above our heads!

Week 4

Sunflowers

Reception have been looking after their sunflower seeds and over the last few weeks.  We have been carefully watering our shoots  and measured how tall the plant is growing. We used our maths skills to measure our sunflowers using cubes and recorded how tall they have grown. Next week we are hoping to take them home and continue to look after them until they have grown into beautiful sunflowers.

 Painting Sunflowers

We have been finding out about one of the world’s most famous paintings and the man who painted it: Sunflowers by Vincent Van Gogh.  Reception read the story of ‘Camille and The Sunflowers’ by Laurence Anholt.  We used thick paints to make our own sunflower designs.

Week 3

 Farmer Duck

We listened to the story of poor "Farmer Duck" by Martin Waddell.  He works hard on a farm all day and all night, while the Lazy Farmer lies in bed and eats chocolate. However, by the end of the story the Lazy Farmer gets his comeuppance when the other farm animals decide to teach him a lesson!  Taking inspiration from the story we learned about farm animals, jobs on the farm, mother and baby animals, animals homes and took part in a 'Do the Duck' dance.

Week 2

 Cycling

This term Mrs Williams will be delivering cycle coaching in our Reception class.  The children loved their first session using a balance bike and lifting their feet.

 Handa's Surprise

This week we have been reading the story "Handa's Surprise" set in Kenya.  The children tasted tropical fruits and developed their descriptive language.  We wrote a riddle and described what our chosen fruit looks, tastes and feels like.

Week 1

 Peepo!

We have been looking at the story "Peepo!" by Janet and Allan Ahlberg.  A story set in the 1940's which looks at what a baby can see as they look around their family home.  We enjoyed comparing some of the rooms in the story, to what our houses and rooms look like now.  We saw a kettle, an iron and toilets that were very different from what we are used to!

Super Sentences ✍️

 Rekenreks

This week the children have been introduced to rekenreks in maths. Rekenreks are similar to an abacus and we have been learning how to use them.
We know that instead of counting each bead across, we can subitise (instantly look at a number of objects and recognise how many there) and move a number across at the same time.  We have been practising this subitising by putting our finger in the correct place and moving the beads across together. We can confidently do this and have achieved and demonstrated this in just a couple of lessons!
