‘A Stepping Stone into the Future’

Spring B

 Week 3

This week we have been reading the traditional tale 'The Three Billy Goats Gruff'. The children have loved getting involved with retelling the story using the story map we created. We set ourselves a challenge to design and build strong bridges to help the goats cross the river safely.

 Building Bridges

The children designed and built some amazing bridges. They used materials from our junk modeling area to see what would make the strongest bridges. We tested them using some of our animals from our small world area. We explored further to see if we could make our bridges stronger by adding anything.

 Black and White Day

It was amazing to celebrate Newcastle United's Carabao Cup victory with the children this week. It was great to see so many black and white stripes in the school. In PE we started to develop our football skills by practicing some dribbling and passing drills before attempting a game. Hopefully we have all created a day that will live long in the children's memories. We made history!

 Maths

This week the children have been exploring doubles. We have been singing a new doubles rap whilst using our fingers to help us visualise what it means to be a double number. Our stem sentences this week have been __ + __ make __ ; __ is made of __ and __ .

 Week 2

The Gruffalo

This week our story has been 'The Gruffalo' by Julia Donaldson. Through 'Plan to Play' the children enjoyed using the characters to retell and act out the story of the Gruffalo, also by using their own imagination they changed the ending of story. We got the chef hats out again and made Gruffalo Crumble using shredded wheat, melted chocolate, purple and green grapes, strawberry laces, dried apricots and marshmallows to symbolise the different parts of the Gruffalo's body.

Gruffalo Crumble

Making the Gruffalo crumble was very fun. We melted chocolate and mixed it with wheat cereal before adding our toppings which represent the Gruffalo's features.

 1 less

This week the children have been singing the song '10 in a bed' and have began to develop their understanding of what happens to the amount of bears when one falls off.

 Music

The children are developing their skills with moving their bodies and arms to a steady beat while they use their singing voices.

 Week 1

This week Reception have been reading 'Mr Wolf's Pancakes' by 'Jan Fearnley'. The children were great at retelling the story and identifying what ingredients he needed to mix together. Our writing challenge this week was to write a speech bubble for Mr Wolf.

Cooking Demonstration

This week Chef Matthews visited our class to show the children how to make pancakes. Reception were able to help Chef Matthews by telling him what ingredients he needed, thanks to our story of the week 'Mr Wolf's Pancakes'. No pancakes were harmed in the process. The children had a flipping good time!

Taste Testing Pancake Toppings

Taste testing pancakes this week was a very difficult job. We tested 4 toppings to see which one was our favourite; was it golden syrup, strawberry, chocolate or lemon juice? After we tested them we made a class bar chart to see our results.

 Fine Motor Challenge

This week our fine motor challenge was to create our own pancake face by choosing what type of fruit to cut out and stick on top.

Ordering the Numberblocks

This week the children have been sorting the numberblocks in the correct order. The children noticed that when the numberblocks are in the correct order they look like stairs. The children have been using the stem sentence _ is more than _ when changing the order.
