‘A Stepping Stone into the Future’

Fire Building and Cooking Skills

Our children learn skills from  being able to talk about the safety rules of the WDPS fire pit to building a fire and cooking a range of meals.

WDPS have been supporting the children from Moldgreen in Huddersfield, around the fire and in our outdoor learning areas. They have been making S’mores and toast on our fire.

Using our toasting irons to make toasted sandwiches.

Using the Dutch Oven to make chocolate chip muffins.

Phase 2 have been expanding their fire cooking knowledge by preparing and pizzas that have been cooked on the fire.

Our governor Jim West has been teaching our children how to reduce, recycle, reuse, by using waste shredded paper to make eco blocks for the fire.

Year 5/6 have been following instructions and measuring out ingredients to make their own bread. Once proved they needed it, shaped it and cooked it on the skillet. When they were cooked they covered them on either garlic bread or school cooked jam and ate them.

Phase 1 have been working on their first safety and being responsible and the learning how to toast a marshmallow on the open fire and make it into a S’more. The children have used so many skills during this task: speak and listening; instruction taking; safety; responsibility; empathy and understanding; resilience and many more.

Making their own dough to make flat bread garlic bread. 

Our children in years 5, 5/6 and 6 have been following instructions and making dough to make their flat bread garlic bread to be cooked on the skillet over the fire. 

Year 2 have been introduced to the flint and steel and have been learning how to create a spark with it.

Year 5/6 planned their own session of den building, litter picking, toasting marshmallows to make S’mores and making pizzas to be cooked on the open fire.

Year 6 have been making chocolate chip muffins on the fire using orange peels for the casings.

Year 2 learning how to make pizza and cook it on the open fire.

Year 5/6 have been learning how to build their own fire and light them successfully as part of their Life Skills Gold Award.

Year 3/4 have been making pizzas, not to be deterred by the gusty wind, our children showed their understanding and resilience and still made them, however we cooked them indoors then ate them around the fire pit. They have also been gathering kindling needed to make a successful fire and ordering it according to its size.

Year 3 have been practicing their fire safety at our fire pit, using the kettle to boil the water to make hot chocolate.

Year 5/6 making bread twirls and cooking them on willow whips over the fire.

Year 3/4 have been learning how to use a Kellie Kettle safely to boil the water to make hot chocolate.

Year 4 have been practicing their fire safety at our fire pit, using the kettle to boil the water to make hot chocolate.

Pizza Making and Fire Safety

Years 3 to 6 have been working on their fire safety in our Bushcraft Area. They have prepared their pizzas using hygiene and safety guidelines, then the pizzas have been baked on the fire.  Even the cold and rain did not deter their incredible resilience. Each year group enjoyed their session and especially their pizzas. 

Year 6 have been learning how to create a spark using a flint and steel to start a fire.

Year 4 have been learning how to toast marshmallows, using fresh cut willow whips.

Our children in Year 5 have been toasting Marshmallows on the fire using fresh cut willow whips for skewers.

Year 5/6 Learning how to make Chocolate Chip Muffins And Chocolate Bananas: cooking them on the fire.

Our children in Year 5 have been learning how to build and start a fire using tinder and kindling found around our Bushcraft Area as part of our LSCA.

Our children in Year 5 have been preparing and cooking Chocolate Bananas on the fire.
