Fire Building and Cooking Skills
Our children learn skills from being able to talk about the safety rules of the WDPS fire pit to building a fire and cooking a range of meals.
Phase 1 have been working on their first safety and being responsible and the learning how to toast a marshmallow on the open fire and make it into a S’more. The children have used so many skills during this task: speak and listening; instruction taking; safety; responsibility; empathy and understanding; resilience and many more.
Making their own dough to make flat bread garlic bread.
Our children in years 5, 5/6 and 6 have been following instructions and making dough to make their flat bread garlic bread to be cooked on the skillet over the fire.
Year 3/4 have been making pizzas, not to be deterred by the gusty wind, our children showed their understanding and resilience and still made them, however we cooked them indoors then ate them around the fire pit. They have also been gathering kindling needed to make a successful fire and ordering it according to its size.
Years 3 to 6 have been working on their fire safety in our Bushcraft Area. They have prepared their pizzas using hygiene and safety guidelines, then the pizzas have been baked on the fire. Even the cold and rain did not deter their incredible resilience. Each year group enjoyed their session and especially their pizzas.
