‘A Stepping Stone into the Future’

Summer A

 Week 4

This week we have continued to observe our chicks grow. The children can see that the chicks are beginning to develop feathers and are nearly ready to go back to the farm as they're are becoming very jumpy and to big for their box. The children used their writing skills to document and describe what the chicks look, feel and sound like. We really will miss the chicks.

 Number bonds of 10

The children have continued to develop their understanding of the number bonds of 10. We used the Rekenreks and 10 frames to help us to visualise the two parts that make the whole. We then recorded our findings using number sentences such as 6+4=10.

 Week 3

The Little Red Hen

The children have enjoyed looking at the journey that the 'Little Red Hen' took to make her delicious bread. To show the children the process of making bread we turned our classroom into a bakery and made our own delicious bread buns using yeast.  The children discussed if they would have shared their bread with the characters in the story.

 Living Eggs

This week, the eggs arrived.  We were so lucky to watch the chicks hatch during the school day.  Reception are looking after them; giving them food and water every day and cuddles. They are so fluffy and small!

 1 Less Than

This week the children continued to develop their understanding of the concept of '1 less'. We sang the song '5 monkeys jumping on the bed' and used our concrete resources to support us.

 Week 2

This week we read a fictional book about space called "Aliens Love Underpants" by Claire Freedman & Ben Cort. The Aliens came to Earth to steal people's underpants from their washing lines and drawers. The children wrote descriptive sentences about their missing underpants and thought it was so funny.

 Moon Rock Cakes

Chef Matthews was back from his adventures from space with a new recipe for 'Moon Rock Cakes'. The children helped weigh and mix the ingredients.

PE - Moving Like the Planets

In PE we read an interactive story about aliens blasting off into space in a rocket and landing on the moon. Before we landed we past all of the planets in our solar system and used our bodies to move like the planets' atmospheres. The children loved making a ring around their friend when making Saturn and blowing as hard as they could when they made Neptune.

Subitising 6

The children used quick number recognition to identify number patterns that have 6 spots. The children then made their own number patterns to make 6 and described how they can see 6. "3 and 3 make 6 , 5 and 1 make 6".

 VE Day

On Thursday we celebrated VE Day by wearing red, white and blue. The children loved making their own castles fit for a king and queen using the blocks in the small world. We made a delicious treat from strawberries (red) bananas (white) and blueberries (blue) and ate them whilst listening to a story about VE Day. We even listened to some music from 1940s and thought it sounded good.

 Week 1

Whatever Next!

Reception have enjoyed a space themed week inspired by the Jill Murphy story “Whatever Next!”.  The children used props to act out the story. We have been practising how to use a capital letter, finger spaces and a full stop when writing sentences. We were amazed by watching footage of real astronauts living in space. We compared the differences of how we go to the toilet, prepare food, sleep, brush our teeth and wash our hair to astronauts in space. The children have developed great understanding of new vocabulary such as orbit and gravity. It was very exciting to be read 'If I was an Astronaut' by Serena Chancellor a real astronaut from the International Space Station.

 Space Play

Roleplay on the Moon

This week the children had so much fun counting backwards from 10 before blasting off to land on the moon with their yellow space boots on. They had a picnic with the owl and it was great to hear some of the new vocabulary being used.

 Gustav Holst

We listened to two contrasting compositions by Gustav Holst that were inspired by the atmospheres on Mars and Neptune. The children observed the tempo and the dynamics of each piece and adapted their drawing styles accordingly.
