‘A Stepping Stone into the Future’

Autumn A

Week 8

This week has been all about bread. We have been learning how its made and where it comes from. We have looked at several different types of bread and compared texture, how it feels, smell, looks and taste. We have then made three different loaves and tasted those. It got a bit messy at times but everyone worked well in their teams to produce some yummy loaves to be proud of. Well done Year 6.

We also enjoyed making Sloppy Joes in cooking class on Wednesday and a spooky disco on Thursday.

Week 7

This week we finished our English book Skellig. The children really engaged well throughout the story and loved how it ended. The children then wrote a diary entry from Michael during key moments in the book.

Week 6

This week has been assessment week. We are really pleased with how well the children are advancing with their arithmetic skills. They are gaining confidence and starting to find and apply solutions to problems themselves which is really encouraging to see. Well done Year 6.

Week 5

This week in maths, we have been looking at long multiplication, prime numbers and square and cube numbers, being able to identify properties of each. In English we have continued with Skellig where there was an audible gasp from the children when they learnt who Skellig was. They are really enjoying the story so far. We’ve been looking at the relationships between the characters and analysing why they feel like that. In Science, we’ve been looking at the human body, our lifecycle and how we grow.

Week 4

We've had another solid week of learning this week. In maths we have been looking at common factors and multiples. Please support your child in practicing their times tables. In English we have been continuing with Skellig where we wrote a character analysis of Skellig and what we know about him so far. We had fun in P.E on Friday doing Just Dance, which the children really got stuck into.

Week 3

This week we enjoyed a cooking session on Wednesday where we had fun making fajitas. See our gallery below. We also enjoyed bushcraft where we were harvesting vegetables.

In English we have continued Skellig where we have begun to look at the main characters in the story and why they could be important. In maths we have continued place value and fractions, with lots of times table practice.

Week 2

We have been looking at place value in maths and been revision fractions. Children really need to know their times tables to be confident in doing fractions so please support your child in learning them if they cannot recall them quickly.

In English we have started our reading text called Skellig where we have been predicting what the story is about from the front cover.

Week 1

Welcome back Year 6. We’ve had a great week getting to know each other. This was further helped with our first trip as a year 6 class to Gibside where the children enjoyed Geo-caching.

All the children have settled in well and are quickly familiarising themselves with our class rules. We hope this is a good start to a brilliant year ahead.
