β€˜A Stepping Stone into the Future’

Spring Term B

Spring 2 Week 5

We enjoyed a visit from 2 ladies who work for a Hedgehog Hogspital on Friday. They told us about how we can help hedgehogs at home by having hedgehog highways in our gardens (holes or gaps in fences) to allow hedgehogs to pass through while they are hunting for food. They asked us to avoid using slug pellets as these can kill hedgehogs as well as dogs and cats. They said that they had hedgehogs in the hogspital who had been injured by gardening equipment such as strimmers so it is always a good idea to check under bushes and piles of leaves before using power tools. For anyone wanting to help hedgehogs by feeing them, the best food to leave is dried cat food. Hedgehogs can’t drink milk as it makes them ill but they love fresh water to drink and can get very thirsty in warm weather. πŸ¦”πŸΎ

This week we had lots of fun with our Design Technology project all about Perfect Pizzas! We tasted and evaluated some ready made pizzas πŸ• to see what we enjoyed about them or if they could be improved. We learned about the history of pizza and all about some of the different vegetables we could use as toppings. We then designed our own healthy veggie pizza. We made our pizza design (remembering our food hygiene rules) which was cooked in the oven. Finally, we tasted and evaluated our own pizza! πŸ•πŸ˜‹

Spring 2 Week 4

We had a fabulous time in the Bushcraft area this week! We were all delighted to see several frogs 🐸 and lots of frogspawn in the pond. We learned that we need to stay still and quiet so the frogs don’t get scared and hide at the bottom of the pond. We even heard them croaking!
We had to look out for any signs of Spring and we were really pleased to see lots of evidence that Spring had arrived. We found moss, feathers, bugs, as well as lots of green shoots and even some flowers.

In Music, we have practised accompanying a song using percussion instruments! We had to listen carefully to match the speed and pulse of the song.

Spring 2 Week 3

Congratulations to the children who received Achievers Awards this week. Well done to Ruby, Irene, Lucy, Elise and Chloe πŸ‘πŸ˜ŠπŸŒŸ

Many thanks to all of our families who sent in money in aid of Comic Relief on Friday. We raised £300 across the school! The children looked fantastic in their outfits smiley

In Maths this week, we have begun to look at measuring height and length. We have compared items to see which are shorter and longer/taller.

In English we have begun looking at a new story, The Smeds and The Smoos by Julia Donaldson. We thought about and wrote some questions of things we would like to know about the story and its characters. Here is a link to the story:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yRpTgV-k9j8

Spring 2 Week 2

Congratulations go to the children who received this week’s Achievers Awards. Well done to Ralphy, Jay, Ella, Lennox and Millie B πŸ‘πŸ†πŸŒŸ

In History this week, we have been learning about the First World War. We looked at a world map to see the countries involved and found out about the important role played by animals during the war. A pigeon called Cher Ami carried messages that saved many soldiers! He is now in a museum along with the gold medal he received! πŸ¦πŸ… We also learned how life was different in 1916, and that many people found out what was happening in the war from letters sent home or by watching Pathe News reels at the cinema. We even watched a short clip of the famous film star Charlie Chaplin! He reminded us a little of Mr Bean.

We had quite a treat this week when Goldilocks and the Wolf came into school! There was a court case an we had to look at the evidence (including CCTV footage!) to decide if anyone was guilty of a crime...

Goldilocks then visited us in the classroom so we could discuss the case and decide who was in the wrong. We also role played the different characters. What an exciting start to the week! πŸ‘©πŸΌβ€πŸ¦±πŸ»πŸ»πŸ»

Spring 2 Week 1

As always, well done to this week’s Achievers who received a certificate this week. Congratulations to Amal, Jonny, Elise, Freddie and Lily πŸ‘πŸŒŸπŸ†

In Science, we went outside for a Spring walk around school to see if we could spot any signs of Spring. We saw some leaves and shoots growing, as well as some daffodils in bud. We were very excited to spot some birds - 2 gorgeous, squawky magpies! - and their nest in the Bushcraft area where they have made their home! 🌱🌼πŸͺΊ

On Thursday the children dressed up as their favourite story characters for World Book Day! πŸ“š We thought they all looked fantastic! We talked about our favourite stories and authors.

In English, we have begun a new story, Peace at Last by Jill Murphy. We all felt sorry for Mr Bear as he just couldn’t sleep as it was too noisy! We wrote thought bubbles for Mr Bear to show what he was thinking.

In Maths this week, we have been looking at tens and ones. We have used Dienes equipment to represent tens numbers. We know that one ten is the same as ten ones.
