Summer A
Week 3
This week we have been continuing with our new topic Why do people live near Volcanoes? We learned that the earth has 4 different layers and that some of them are solid, some liquid and some molten and that the closer you get to the middle of the earth the hotter it gets. We also learned why we have mountains, how they are formed and where they will be found in realation to tectonic plates.
In English we have been continuing to read our book Oliver and the Seawigs. We have been introduced to two new characters Mr Culpeper and Iris the mermaid. We learned about Idioms and Hyperbole and used this to write our own description of Iris based on what we have learned about her so far in the story. She was not what we expected a typical mermaid would be!
Week Two
Year Four tackled the allotments this week, digging up the weeds, to prepare the raised beds for more vegetables and flowering plants. The children each sowed a variety of seeds and placed them into the cold frames for germination. With this glorious weather, we're hoping to plant out our seedlings in a few weeks time. Continuing with our time outside, the children were set & enjoyed tasks in the Bush Craft area. The pond at this time of year has had an explosion of tadpoles and the children enjoyed watching the residence of the nesting boxes and mini beast hotels.
As a school, we celebrated eighty years of the end of the Second World War. Both Children and staff were invited to come to school dressed red, white and blue. The children completed a plethora of work in the classroom, including poems, newspaper articles and art work and the day culminated in a whole school assembly lead by Mr Johnston.
Year 4
Week One
We've had a fantastic return to school, helped with the sunny days and warm temperatures.
In English, our class have started a new book, 'Oliver and the Seawigs'. They have been predicting what the story may be about, by looking for clues on the front cover.
In Maths, the class have enjoyed translating many points and shapes on a given grid. These are sometimes shown as a world, or local map for the children to navigate.
The children have enjoyed getting out doors, in the sunshine to be taught their tennis lessons. They have been successfully using their racket to control their tennis ball, as well are developing their skills.
