‘A Stepping Stone into the Future’

Summer A

Week 5

Sam Plants a Sunflower

This week the children have been writing instructions linked to our story "Sam Plants a Sunflower".  We have written a sentence for each picture, using finger spaces and full stops and concentrating on our letter formation.  We have planted sunflower seeds and labelled the parts of a plant and sequenced how to plant a seed.

Maths

In Maths the children have been ordering numbers to 10 and playing games, jumping along the number track in 1's and 2's.  They have also identified numbers before and after 5.

Stars of the Week!

Our stars of the week this are:

Lennie reader of the week.

Roman for his achievements this week.

 Week 4

Handa's Surprise

This week we have been reading the story "Handa's Surprise" set in Kenya.  We developed our descriptive writing by using words in our sentences to describe what the fruit looks and feels like.  The children have sequenced the order of the animals onto a story map and enjoyed exploring the fruits with their senses and then had a taste of each fruit from the story.  We also created some African patterned necklaces.

Number Bonds to 10

In Maths this week the children have been completing number bonds to ten and writing number sentences using the addition and equals signs.

Stars of the Week!

Our stars of the week are:

Gracie for star writer and star of the week Ava for her work in phonics.

Week 3

Peepo!

We have been looking at the story "Peepo!" by Janet and Allan Ahlberg.  A story set in the 1940's which looks at what a baby can see as they look around their family home.  We enjoyed comparing some of the rooms in the story, to what our houses and rooms look like now.  We saw a kettle, an iron and toilets that were very different from what we are used to!

Investigating Old Objects

This week the children have been investigating and exploring some old objects.  We thought about how the objects might have been used.  Reception compared the old objects to the new modern day versions. The children were amazed at how heavy the iron was.

Maths

In Maths this week the children have been singing the song "5 Little Kittens Jumping on the Bed" and recording number sentence facts of 5 using the addition and equals symbols.

Stars of the Week!

Our stars of the week are:

Eleanor was the Maths wizard and Dylan was star of the week for respect.

Week 2

The Zig Zags

We had a lovely morning in Early Years welcoming author Naomi Barley to West Denton Primary School.  She shared her story "The Zig Zags" about the Spots, the Stripes and the Zig Zags on planet Zorkk.  The children enjoyed making crafts linked to the book.

Doubles

The children have been learning their double facts by filling ten frames in twos.  They enjoyed seeing how each pair built the total and were quick to spot when a frame showed a double. Their confidence with doubles is really starting to grow.

Aeroplanes

The children had great fun in PE today as we explored travelling like aeroplanes.  They practised gliding into their own space, changing direction smoothly and stopping safely when they heard the signal.  Our chasing game became a 'runway challenge', with children zooming away from friends while keeping control.

Stars of the Week!

Our stars of the week are Amelia and Cruz.

Week 1

Whatever Next!

Reception have enjoyed a space themed week inspired by the Jill Murphy story “Whatever Next!”.  The children used props to act out the story.  We have been practising how to use a capital letter, finger spaces and a full stop when writing sentences.

The Planets

Reception listened to the opposing music compositions Mars and Venus from Gustav Holst’s “The Planets”.  We created our own planets using pastels and blended the colours in response to the music.

Counting

The children practised counting bigger collections by moving objects or marking them off one by one, helping them see how systematic counting makes it easier to know ‘how many altogether’.

Attendance

This week Poppy class had the highest attendance in school which was 98.2%.

Well done everyone!
