Summer A
Space
Some of our children have been showing a real spark of excitement about planets and space so we followed their lead and planned some out of this world activities together. Junk modelling quickly became the big favourite. With a few visual ideas to fire up their imaginations the children set to work creating space ships, rockets and aliens.
During all this hands on making they chose their own materials, tried out different ways to stick and join things together and grew braver with their ideas. We loved watching their creations change and grow with a little help from adults when needed and seeing just how proud they were of their finished space inventions.
5 Little Aliens
The children had lots of fun making hand print aliens for our space ship. We also sang '5 Little Aliens in a Flying Saucer' which the children loved. They joined in with the counting and the actions and it made the activity even more fun.
Planets
The children also had a brilliant time mixing colours and painting their own planets for our display. They loved flicking and swirling the paints together to see what new colours would appear and were very proud of the planets they created for our little corner of space.
The Zig Zags
We had a lovely morning in Early Years welcoming author Naomi Barley to West Denton Primary School. She shared her story "The Zig Zags" about the Spots, the Stripes and the Zig Zags on planet Zorkk. The children enjoyed making crafts linked to the book.
Planting
It’s that time of year to get green fingered. The children replanted seeds from last year’s sunflower heads to grow their own individual flowers. They discovered that the seeds from a tomato can grow more tomato plants and explored what plants need to grow and thrive. They love caring for the plants, watering them, watching them change and keeping them safe. These experiences have sparked rich conversations, careful observations and deepened their curiosity about the natural world.
Heavy and Light
Nursery have been learning how to use scales. The children have been predicting which objects are heaviest or lightest and using the scales to check. They’ve also been learning new words to talk about weight.
Bushcraft
We had an exciting little visit to the Bushcraft pond today to see the frogs and frogspawn. The frogs were enjoying the warm sun, floating near the surface so the children could watch them up close.
