PE and Sport Premium (NB Swimming Data at bottom of page)
Background
Following the 2012 London Olympics, it was decided to provide extra funding for Primary Schools. PE provision is assisted at West Denton Primary School (WDPS) by PE premium funding.
The government is providing additional funding of £150 million per annum from 2013 to 2020 to improve the provision of Physical Education (PE) and sport in primary schools. This funding is ring-fenced and therefore can only be spent on the provision of PE and sport in schools.
Schools must spend the additional funding on improving their provision of PE and sport, but they will have the freedom to choose how they do this.
The Effect of Pupil Premium on Pupils' PE and Sports Participation and Attainment
Pupil Premium has been used effectively in school to provide our children with a range of sporting opportunities. This includes whole school cycling, dance and football.
All of our children are given the skills to ride a bike safely and confidently regardless of previous ability. They are also given the opportunity to take part in one-day and multi-day cycle rides, including overseas.
“I love cycling. At first I couldn’t ride a bike very well but after cycling at school I became more confident. I like to play on my bike every weekend now.”
The children are provided with professional dance tuition in school and learn to perform an exciting range of dance styles including ‘Street Dance’.
NUFC foundation provides professional football coaching to all children across each phase in school.
“I really enjoyed taking part in the sessions with NUFC foundation. After taking part I decided to join a local football team. I train each week and play matches at the weekend.”
How We Will Make Sure these Improvements are Sustainable
Staff are given the opportunity to attend a range of PE courses to enable them to update existing skills and develop new skills.
By providing CPD opportunities to staff, it ensures that PE and participation in sports is sustainable and relevant throughout the PE curriculum in school.

How the funding has made a difference to PE and sport participation
Evaluation of the impact of the sport premium funding will be carried out as part of our self-evaluation arrangements in July 2020.
The self-evaluation will look at how we have used the sports premium funding to improve the quality and breadth of PE and sporting provision, including increased participation in PE.
It will evaluate the progress made in PE but also other areas of development such as self-esteem and confidence.
We will be able to compare the number of children involved in sporting activities in and outside of school.
The staff are working alongside external agencies to improve their own professional development in improving the teaching of PE and sport.
In July 2020 we will have data to support the impact of the sports premium funding on pupil progress and involvement in sport.
