‘A Stepping Stone into the Future’

Spring A

 Week 7

We were inspired by the story "Supertato" by Sue Hendra to make our own supehero and villain vegetables.  Look at our amazing models!

Making Our Own Super Carrots

 Kitchen Disco

It was obesity week this week and we thought about what snacks we have that are healthy. So we made a special fruit salad for our snack.

 Playing Maths Games

We have loved playing maths games this week to develop our number recognition.

Music

In reception we have been continuing to practice our singing by changing the tempo (speed) in the songs that we have learnt over the half term.

Church Trip

The children were so well behaved on their first trip in Reception. We had a great time visiting the West Denton Community Church.

 Week 6

This week Reception have been learning about Valentines Day. We read 'Love Monster' by 'Rachel Bright' and talked about our emotions and feelings. We made cards for our loved ones and did some observational drawings of some red roses.

 Week 6

Reception listened to the fantastic story "Once there were Giants" by Martin Waddell.  The story follows a baby who lives amongst giants – Mum and Dad. The baby grows a little, and soon she can walk and talk. Then the baby grows a lot, until she is all grown up and has a baby of her own.  The class discussed how they have changed from when they were younger.

 Week 5

Reception have been learning all about Chinese New Year and listened to the story "The Chinese New Year" and "Maisy's Chinese New Year" by Lucy Cousins.  We set up a Chinese shop in our role play area, made paper craft lanterns and completed a Numicon dragon puzzle.

I Spy Writing

Chinese Shop Roleplay

 Taste Testing Chinese Food

Reception tried Chinese food and talked about their likes and dislikes.  Using chopsticks was tricky!

 Making Bigger Numbers

This week, the children have continued to engage with activities that develop their understanding of composition, or the numbers within numbers. They have also have began to develop their knowledge of numbers 6,7 and 8.

Using instruments in music

This week the children have continued to develop their skills in keeping the beat using shakers.

Week 3

 Six Dinner Sid

Our story of the week is "Six Dinner Sid" by Inga Moore.  It is a fabulous story about a sly cat who manages to get six dinners a day!  We made lost cat posters.

 Vet Role Play

This week our home corner has turned into a vets. The children have been great at helping all the animals feel better.

 5 Speckled Frogs

We investigated different ways to make 5.  Here we are working out how many frogs are hiding in the pool.  We repeated the STEM sentences as a group '5 is made from 4 and 1'.

Week 2

  Cinderella

This week we listened to different versions of the traditional tale Cinderella. We even watched a pantomime version, oh yes we did!   Reception then designed, labelled and made a new dress for our Barbie's to wear to the ball. They all looked fabulous!

 Maths Games

This week the children have been developing their counting on and subitising skills to play board games. We have had so much fun, especially playing 'Soggy Doggy'.

 Music

During music this week the children have been keeping the beat to familiar songs by beating a drum.

Spanish

This week West Denton had a visitor from La Peza in Spain. He came to our class to teach us some Spanish words for colours and numbers.

Week 1

 Squirrel's New Year's Resolution

This week the children have been recalling all their wonderful festive memories from their two week holiday. We read 'Squirrel's New Year's Resolution' by 'Pat Miller' and thought about what we could do as a class to help more at school and at home. The children thought that they could help with the dishes at home, tidy up faster at school and help their mams with the cleaning.

 Maths Games

The children have enjoyed using their subitising and number recognition skills to play maths games with their friends.
