‘A Stepping Stone into the Future’

Spring B

Week 5

Eid

This week the children enjoyed discovering what Eid is and why it’s a special celebration for many families.  We talked about kindness, sharing, and how people celebrate with family, decorations and special clothes.

🍽️ Tasting New Foods

The children were brilliant at trying a range of Asian foods, including dates, samosas, pakoras, cucumber raita and naan bread.  There were lots of happy faces as they explored new flavours.

We finished with lively party games that encouraged teamwork and plenty of laughter.

Week 4

 The Very Hungry Caterpillar

Nursery have loved exploring our story of the week, "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" by Eric Carle, especially the tasty foods and the magical transformation into a butterfly.

We sparked the children’s senses by adding citrus fruit to the water tray.  The bright colours, fresh scents and squishy textures were a big hit.

The children experimented with mixing shades of green to create the perfect colours for their Hungry Caterpillar paintings.

Nursery enjoyed choosing from a range of resources to design and make their own Hungry Caterpillar hats.

The children strengthened their fine motor skills as they carefully threaded tiny beads onto pipe cleaners or arranged pom poms in a row to make their own colourful caterpillars.

We enjoyed learning how to complete repeating patterns using two and three colours.

The children created their own repeating patterns with coloured cubes, experimenting with different colour sequences.

Nursery made delicious caterpillar biscuits by spreading icing and sticking Smarties in a row for the body. Finally, they added a chocolate button for the face.

Week 3

The DISGUSTING Sandwich

Nursery have been gripped by the fantastic book "The Disgusting Sandwich" by Gareth Edwards.  The story follows a very hungry Badger who spots a beautiful peanut butter sandwich.  The sandwich gets dropped in sand and a smelly pond. A boy then runs over the sandwich with a scooter and then it gets infested with ants and snails.  It ends up a DISGUSTING sandwich.

We helped poor hungry Badger make a sandwich by carefully spreading the butter and selecting delicious filling.

Experimenting with textures and materials to make collage sandwich designs.

 Shell Exploration

A simple story time in our book corner grew into a lovely child led investigation.  While reading "Let's Go Out and About", the page about the beach sparked lots of excitement.  The children chatted about their own visits to the seaside and whether they had ever found shells.  One child wondered, “Can you hear the sea in a shell?” which quickly captured everyone’s interest.

To build on their curiosity, we brought out a large box of real shells.  The children explored them with enthusiasm, noticing the different shapes, colours, patterns and sizes. They compared textures, shared their favourites and held each one to their ears to test the “sea sound.”

After plenty of experimenting, the children decided that the biggest shell made the best sea noise.

Silly Soup

This week in Nursery we had a wonderfully giggly time playing Silly Soup.  It is a playful rhyming game that helps children listen closely and notice words that sound the same.

We gathered a collection of objects that rhyme such as hog dog log and clog.  The children took turns choosing an item and popping it into our Silly Soup bowl.  Each time something new went in we gave the mixture a big stir and joined in with our special Silly Soup song.

Here is the rhyme we used during our game:

Today we're making silly soup.

We're making soup that's silly.

We're going to put it in the bowl.

To make it nice and chilly.

It is also easy to try at home. See what rhyming treasures you can find and make your own Silly Soup together.

Week 2

 Bedtime Book Bash!

As part of our World Book Day celebrations, we enjoyed a magical Bedtime Book Bash!  The children came to school dressed in their pyjamas and brought their favourite soft toys for cosy cuddles.  We even had a delicious milkshake station topped with cream and marshmallows for an extra special treat.

Older children shared books with our youngest pupils and we took part in story themed challenges inspired by "The Three Billy Goats Gruff", "The Three Little Pigs" and "Goldilocks and the Three Bears".  Nursery also enjoyed nursery rhyme props and designed and made their own traditional tales books.

It was a wonderful celebration of reading!

 You Choose Bedtime

We ended our cosy celebration by sharing "You Choose Bedtime" by Nick Sharratt.  Inspired by the story, the children created their very own bedtime routines where they chose what would happen — which toys to play with in the bath, what to wear to bed and the kind of cosy bed they would snuggle up in.  Here we with our cuddle toys and pyjamas for World Book Day.

 Milkshake Station

The children all made a delicious milkshake, with squirty cream and marshmallows on top.  Yum!

 Sharing a Story

The older children came to Nursery to share bedtime stories.  Thank you!
