‘A Stepping Stone into the Future’

Spring A

Week 6

Mr Wolf's Pancakes

This week we listened to the story "Mr Wolf's Pancakes"by Jan Fearnley.  We thought about what Mr Wolf said in the story and wrote a matching speech bubble.

Pancake Toppings

We added different toppings to our pancakes and did very well to cut them up.  Our topping choices included strawberry jam, lemon, chocolate spread and golden syrup.  Yum! What is your favourite flavour?

Reception also learned the poem 'Mix a Pancake' and performed it as a class.

Comparing Groups

Reception compared two groups using the words more, fewer and equal.

Moving Picture

Poppy  class have been exploring colour mixing whilst making an underwater background for our sea creature design.  They experimented with mixing different tints and shades of blue, developing their understanding of how colours can be changed with white and black paint.  We then sketched and painted a sea animal.  We combined our back grounds and used our cutting skills to create a moving Commotion in the Ocean picture.  Everyone enjoyed watching their sea creature travel.  Great work, everyone!

Making Music

The children enjoyed their music session with Jane, singing songs, tapping out the rhythm and exploring percussion instruments.

Week 5

Commotion in the Ocean

The children have really enjoyed listening to the short poems in "Commotion in the Ocean" and joining in with the rhymes.  They have been writing about the sea creatures they might see in the ocean.  During our writing sessions, we have been focusing on spelling using 'Fred fingers', correct letter formation, finger spaces and full stops.  The children were extremely proud of their efforts this week and so were we!  They also enjoyed role playing using underwater creatures from the poems, completing a challenging 100 piece jigsaw puzzle, and exploring information books about the ocean and its animals.

Guess who is hiding?

In Maths this week, we continued to explore the composition of 6 and 7 and to recognise a ‘5 and a bit’ structure.  We looked at which Numberblocks join with 5 to make 6 and 7.  When using a ten frame to make 6 and 7, we noticed that the top row was filled.  We have also been writing numbers using our Ten Town mantras.

 Tynemouth Aquarium

Poppy class enjoyed their visit to Tynemouth aquarium. We began with a small workshop where we learned about different rockpool creatures.  The children enjoyed looking at and had a feel of a starfish, sea urchin and anemone.  We then had time to explore the aquarium ourselves and were thrilled to find lots of different types of fish and creatures, including stingrays, seals and sharks! The children loved looking at all the different types of fish and particularly enjoyed going through the ocean tunnel.

Week 4

RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch

Poppy class made bird feeders to hang around the school grounds to prepare for the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch. We used a bird guide and waited quietly to see which birds visited our garden

6 and 7

In Maths we have been exploring numbers 6 and 7.  We used double dice frames and noted they are composed of ‘5 and a bit’.

Owl Babies

This week Reception listened to the story "Owl Babies" by Martin Waddell.  We discussed how the owl characters were feeling and wrote a simple caption, remembering to write our letters neatly and use finger spaces..  They also learned that baby owls are called ‘owlets’.

Owl Oil Pastel Creations

The children created their own owl pictures using oil pastels, adding feathers to represent the wings.  During the activity, we talked about the different parts of an owl, including the eyes, beak, wings and claws.

Week 3

Celebration Assembly

On Friday, we were very excited to welcome our grown ups into school for our Celebration Assembly.  Nursery and both Reception classes came together to celebrate our Stars of the Week.

A big well done to Jordan and Lavender, who were chosen as the Stars of the Week for Poppy Class ⭐  We are so proud of you both and loved sharing this special moment with our families!

Five Little Speckled Frogs

We investigated different ways to make 5.  Here we are working out how many frogs are hiding in the pool.  We repeated the STEM sentences as a group '5 is made from 4 and 1'.

School Pet Visit

This week, a special visitor came to Reception. Our new school pet tortoise visited the class.  The children enjoyed meeting her and watching her walk around her pen.  The children were caring and made her feel welcome.  We will work as a class to come up with a name idea.

Star Write

This week in our writing, we continued the story of Cinderella and wrote about how she was feeling when she could not go to the ball.  We said the sentence “I am sad.” to help us remember it and watched a grown up write it.  Then we held the sentence in our heads and tried to write it by ourselves.

Cinderella Retell

Using the finger puppets, the children enjoyed acting out and retelling the story of Cinderella.

Dress Design

The children have created a dress for Cinderella to wear to the ball, using their designs from last week and adding patterns, colour and sequins to decorate.

Week 2

Cinderella

We listened to different versions of the traditional tale Cinderella and talked about  how Cinderella was feeling at different points in the story. We have designed and labelled a dress for Cinderella to wear to the ball.

Staircase Patterns

This week in Maths we made towers to match the Numberblocks, adding 1 more each time.  We also had to guess which Numberblock was hiding.

Crown Craft

The children decorated their own crowns, practising fine motor skills while carefully adding gems, shapes and special details to their royal creations.

Week 1

Winter Wonderland

Winter Writing

Reception have been using sounds to write simple Winter captions and practised using finger spaces between words. We are working hard on letter formation and presentation.

Balance

This week, Poppy class practised their balance and co-ordination skills. We balanced on one leg with a flat foot and arms outstretched, balanced beanbags on different body parts while walking along skipping ropes and stepped over hurdles as part of a challenging circuit.

Investigating Ice

The children have had lots of fun investigating ice this week, observing how it changed throughout the day as it melted and turned back into water.

Snowflake Painting

Our Winter themed finger challenge this week involved creating patterns on a snowflake using cotton buds. We used different shades of blue and white to add interest. The children also used loose parts to create a snowflake.

Dice Patterns

This week in Maths we have been learning to visualise and describe the arrangements of dots on a dice.  We have been playing lots of different dice games and learning to recognise the dot amounts without touch counting (subitise).

Numberblocks

We helped Numberblocks 1-5 find their missing numberling.
