Spring A
Week 7
This week we have been writing dialogue between the characters Spike and Bubba, based on our reading of the story; we were focusing on how to correctly punctuate and set out direct speech. The highlight of the week was a performance from Hold The Drama, who performed and sang a wonderful show all about recognising emotions. In Science, we started a new topic about forces. We dropped different sized objects into flour, to measure the effect of gravity on falling objects, linked to their size and we also investigated friction by pulling objects across different surfaces and measuring the amount of newtons. A huge congratulations to some of our Y6 children who took part in the basketball tournament at Throckley.
Week 6
In English, we have been writing direct speech, focusing on the correct use of punctuation and adding action to reporting clauses. We finished reading the Water Tower and were shocked by the cliffhanger ending! In PE, we have been practising our basketball skills: passing, travelling and defending. We also did a range of activities around Safer Internet Day.
Week 5
We have been learning about zones of regulation this week and how to identify which emotional state we are feeling in PSHE. We had to sort different emotions into each zone and discuss why we thought they belonged in that zone. In PE, we were working to create and perform symmetrical and asymmetrical balances in our gymnastics unit. We have loved literacy this week, finding out about how suspense is built up in story writing. We analysed a transcript of the Francis video and then wrote our own suspense paragraphs linked to The Water Tower.
Week 4
This week we were treated to an incredible performance of Charlie and Chocolate at Newcastle High School for Girls, which we absolutely loved! Year 5 completed their second week of swimming lessons and developed their life saving skills, wearing their pjs. We have used our inference skills in English to learn about the main characters in the Water Tower and in maths we are continuing our fractions unit. Rocksteady taught us how to play in a band and treated us to an amazing workshop.
Week 3
This week we have been concentrating on writing exciting settling descriptions, based around our reading of The Water Tower. In PE, we demonstrated great team work, attacking and defending skills in bench ball and were put through our paces in a fitness session. Year 5 have all been fantastic in the first week of intensive swimming lessons.
Week 2
In Geography, the children did some exciting experiments to learn about the effects of weathering on rock. The children were fantastic in PE, creating and performing balance routines. In English, we have been planning to write a setting of the Water Tower. In Spanish, the children had an exciting video call with children from a school in Spain, where they got to practise their speaking and listening skills.
Week 1
Happy New Year to all of our children and families!
We have been continuing to learn about the Earth, Sun and Moon in Science; this week we learned about the phases of the moon and the geocentric and heliocentric theories of the solar system. In English we have written instructions on how to look after a pet Minotaur and in Maths, we been comparing fractions.
