‘A Stepping Stone into the Future’

Spring A

Week 7

 Supertato

We were inspired by the story "Supertato" by Sue Hendra to make our own supehero and villain vegetables.  Look at our amazing models!

 Oliver's Fruit Salad

As part of 'healthy eating' week we listened to the story "Oliver's Fruit Salad" by Vivian French and made our own healthy colourful fruit kebabs for snack.

Church Visit

Reception visited West Denton Community Church.  A huge thank you to Luke for showing us all around.  We learned that for Christian's church is like a family, God's family.  The children sang a song, played a game and decorated a heart to wash.  We were then shown what happens in a baptism or christening.

 Christenings

The children shared photographs and talked about their own family celebrations in church.

Week 6

Love Monster

As part of our Valentine's Day themed week we listened to the story "Love Monster" by Rachel Bright.  Love Monster sets out to find someone who will love him just the way he is. His journey is not easy and he finds out that love can find you when you least expect it.  We enjoyed a range of loved themed play activities.

Week 5

 Our History

Reception listened to the fantastic story "Once there were Giants" by Martin Waddell.  The story follows a baby who lives amongst giants – Mum and Dad. The baby grows a little, and soon she can walk and talk. Then the baby grows a lot, until she is all grown up and has a baby of her own.  The class discussed how they have changed from when they were younger.

Baby Bingo

 Babies

We discussed changes over time and looked at some baby photos of our friends.  Reception wrote a shopping list for a new baby and cared for the new born babies in our role play area.

Week 4

 Kung Hei Fat Choi!

Reception have been learning all about Chinese New Year and listened to the story "Maisy's Chinese New Year" by Lucy Cousins.  We set up a Chinese take away in our role play area, counted out money to pay for food and made menus.  Reception tried Chinese food and talked about their likes and dislikes.  Using chopsticks was tricky!  We made paper crafts and completed a Numicon dragon in Maths.

In Maths we have been exploring numbers 6 and 7.  We used double dice frames and noted they are composed of ‘5 and a bit’.

Week 3

 Six Dinner Sid

Our story of the week is "Six Dinner Sid" by Inga Moore.  It is a fabulous story about a sly cat who manages to get six dinners a day!  We made lost cat posters.

 Mog and the Vet

We listened to a story about Mog the cat, who had to visit a vet after she hurt her paw.  Reception enjoyed playing in the vet role play.

Five Little Speckled Frogs

We investigated different ways to make 5.  Here we are working out how many frogs are hiding in the pool.  We repeated the STEM sentences as a group '5 is made from 4 and 1'.

Week 2

 Cinderella

We listened to different versions of the traditional tale Cinderella.  Reception designed, labelled and made a new dress for Cinderella to wear to the ball.   I'm sure you'll agree she was spoilt for choice!

Week 1

 Squirrel's New Years Resolution

It was lovely to welcome all the children back to school on Tuesday after their Christmas break.  This week Reception have been reading "Squirrels New Years Resolution" by Pat Miller.  Squirrel does not know about resolutions and finds out from her friend Bear that "a resolution is a promise you make to yourself to be better or help others".  We thought of our own promise to make.

 Phonics

We have started to read with a partner in our daily phonics lesson.  RWI lessons involve learning letter sounds, Fred talk, reading speedy green words, reading red words, reading alien words, reading a text and also writing captions and that is all within a morning!

Dice Patterns

This week in Maths we have been learning to visualise and describe the arrangements of dots on a dice.  We have been playing lots of different dice games and learning to recognise the dot amounts without touch counting (subitise).
