Autumn A
Week 7
This week in English we have been analysing chapters 13 and 14 of our book War Horse, drilling down into the emotions experienced by key characters and finding evidence as to why they are feeling this way.
In maths, we have been looking at square and cube numbers. The children are also really enjoying Times Table Rock Stars, which helps cement multiplication knowledge. They can do this inside and outside of school as each child has their own login. Their hard work showed as they won the in-school competition for most stars won. Well done Year 6!
We were also experimenting with yeast in science and had some time in the bushcraft area, helping Mrs McHatton tidy, showing resilience and teamwork..
Week 6
In English this week, we have been doing lots of PEE-ing: make your POINT, find the EVIDENCE, EXPLAIN how your evidence backs up your point. The children took to the task very well with some fantastic work produced. This also links in with our promoting a love of reading in school and #WDPSYEAROFREADING. Well done Thistles.
We’ve also been doing lots of singing practice in preparation for our harvest festival in the coming weeks. Finally, in P.E. the children enjoyed a session of Boxersize.
Preparing for our harvest festival

Week 5
In English this week, the children have written some fantastic letters home from the perspective of Trooper Warren from our class book War Horse. We were really impressed with the feelings and emotions they put into it, really grasping the story as if they were there.
In maths, we have been looking at factors, and then common factors between two numbers.
For the last few weeks in P.E., we have been doing touch rugby. These have been fantastic sessions with the children really getting involved.
Week 4
In English, we’ve been looking at feelings throughout certain parts of the book, War Horse, and why they feel like that. We watched a short video called The Enemy which was very thought provoking and brought on a great discussion with some amazing vocabulary used. The children have been enjoying their books during our reading sessions also. Won Thursday had a lovely time in the allotments, working together to clear the beds and surrounding area. We were very impressed with how hardworking every child was. Well done Year 6.
Week 3
In English, we continued our story, War Horse, reading up to chapter 4. The children wrote a diary entry from the perspective of Albert about Joey - Albert’s beloved horse - being sold. In Maths, we have continued with place value, looking at numbers up to 10 million. In geography, we looked at global population and plotted it on a graph. We had a fantastic session of rugby on Thursday, where everyone got stuck in and gave it their all. Unfortunately, we didn’t get any photos as we were having too much fun. Finally in art, the children expressed their thoughts on sadness as you can see in the gallery below.
Week 2
We’ve started our English book War Hourse by Michael Morpurgo this week. This will be our focus text for the next few weeks. We have read up to chapter 3 and analysed the text, forming questions, opinions, thoughts and facts that we know or think so far. In maths we have been focusing on the long multiplication method and quick recall of multiplication facts. In art, the children produced some amazing pictures focusing on emotions.

Week 1
Welcome to year 6. The children have made a great start to the year, bringing a positive and hardworking attitude into the classroom.
In English, we wrote a recipe for the perfect school year and in maths, we have been looking at the 4 operations. It would help us greatly if you could support your child in learning their times tables at home, so they can apply them in maths. We have also been enjoying reading and have a dedicated half hour everyday to listen to your child read. Please ensure they bring their books in every day. Mr Johnston held an assembly about the school rules and these will be shared with you at the drop in session.
All in all it’s been a great and positive first week.
