‘A Stepping Stone into the Future’

Autumn A

Week 7

We had a fantastic trip to Gibside this week where the children learned to use GPS devices to navigate to waypoints, locating hidden boxes with different challenges inside. They worked brilliantly in teams, showing excellent communication and leadership skills. Their behaviour was even praised by teachers from a different school!

Week 6

This week we have been continuing to study War Horse and we wrote letters from the point of view of a soldier. Our street dance routine is coming along brilliantly and we have been adding our own choreography to it. In PE we have been further developing our tag rugby skills and playing mini matches. We enjoyed seeing our families at our reading celebration assembly and some of us earned our first biscuit awards. In Science, we conducted an experiment to investigate which food yeast preferred.

Week 5

In maths this week we have been continuing to learn about the place value of numbers of up to 10,000,000, including flexible partitioning.  In science, we have been classifying animals and in PE we have continued to learn our street dance routines and further develop our attacking and defending with ball skills. In music, we have been composing our music and playing this along with the song  Happy. As part of our computing we had to debug and programme a simulation.

Week 4

Our year 5 pupils have had bikeability this week, where they have learnt how to cycle safely on the road and achieved their level 2 badges, under the supervision of the council's bikeability instructors.  They started with a session on the key stage 2 yard and then progressed to the residential streets close to our school.

Week 3

This week the children have been looking at the features of a diary and writing their own linked to the character of Albert in War Horse - you can read these below…

In computing, we have been learning about functions in coding and in science the children worked well in groups to sort animals into different categories according to their characteristics. In PE, we played our first game of tag rugby, putting all of our new skills into practice. In maths, we have been learning about place value of numbers up to 1,000,000.

Week 2

This week the our core value has been ‘perseverance’ and the children  have certainly shown lots of this when they have been learning long multiplication in our maths lessons. In science, they have been classifying organisms and they have studied the first two chapters of War Horse in Literacy. In Art, the children really enjoyed choosing what they wanted to create and the medium they wanted to use and in computing they have been learning to code.

Week 1

Welcome back Forget-me-nots, what an amazing first week we have had. The children have got off to a an amazing start with exceptional behaviour and a great attitude towards their learning. Their creative writing has definitely been the highlight of the week along with some very life-like self portraits in art. Our new clsss novel is Trash by Andy Mulligan. In maths we have been revisiting formal calculations methods, focusing on short and long multiplication. In PE we have been developing our tag rugby skills.
