Autumn A
Settling into Nursery
Welcome to our new Nursery class at West Denton Primary. We have had a very busy two week induction meeting your lovely children, they seem excited to attend, which has been great to see. Nursery have been learning routines and how to use the classroom equipment. They have been exploring their new surroundings and engaging in play with other children and grown ups. We are looking forward to a fun filled year, take a look at some of the things we have been up to ....
Any concerns or questions please don't hesitate to chat to us.
Ten Town
We begin our Nursery day with a Maths session. The children watched Ten Town on the Smart board and found out all about the number 'Zero Pond'! It has NOTHING living in it because it is so dirty, we sang the zero pond song and learnt the rhyme to help us form a zero correctly when mark making. There is a short story, song and games linked to each number character that lives in Ten Town. The children had to find all the containers with zero objects inside, such as an empty drawer or vase.
Nursery have made a display about the number 0, we practised forming the round numeral 0 "start at the top, nice and slow, all the way round, and there you go!".

Leaf Man
We have been listening to the story "Leaf Man" by Lois Ehlert and discussed the leaves changing colours in Autumn. Using different types of leaves in various warm colours, they each created their own Leaf Man design.
The children were excited to see how the laminator joined their Leaf Man together, "It's like magic" one said. They were so proud of their work and we had a good giggle at some creations.
Autumn Exploration
All things Autumn!
In Nursery this week we have been learning about Autumn. We talked about the changes that happen and how the world around us begins to look a bit different.
We know that in the Autumn, the leaves begin to fall from the trees, and turn brown, red and orange! We also know that the weather begins to get a bit cooler, and we will need to wear our jumpers and jackets!
The children used glue and collage pieces to create a warm Autumn inspired design.
Bonkers about Conkers!
The children have been investigating conkers, we found out they are shiny seeds from a tree. They helped to open the spiky cases and looked at the hand shaped leaves from the tree.

Pumpkins
Nursery explored pumpkins large and small. They used their sense of smell and sense of touch to investigate the weight, shape and skin textures. They carefully looked inside and carved out the seeds using a range of one handed tools.
What does inside smell like?
How does the skin feel?
We copied and used descriptive vocabulary such as "slimy, bumpy, pulp and carve"
Fine Motor Autumn Activities
Before we get children to hold a pencil correctly, they need to engage in gross and fine motor activities that involve climbing, pressing, pulling, squishing, twisting and pinching to build upper body and finger strength.
Finger painting leaves on a tree.

Hammering golf tees into a pumpkin.
Collecting conkers using tea strainers and tongs.
Zoo on the Broom
We had a very exciting visitor today a witch named Charlotte from ZooLab, who shared a spooky story and brought along some interesting animals to pet. The children met a hairy tarantula, corn snake, giant African snail, frog, gerbil and a hissing cockroach. As you will see from the photos, some enjoyed the experience more than others!
