Take Back Control of West Denton Pool - 27-01-21

 

The community of West Denton and the Outer West of Newcastle fear for the future of the West Denton Pool after its closure during the first lockdown. 

 

Several years ago, Newcastle City Council’s Labour administration effectively privatised Newcastle’s leisure centres by handing them to a London based company, Greenwich Leisure Limited (GLL), to run. Decisions about our leisure services are now being taken by a board based in London. GLL took the decision to keep the West Denton Pool closed after lockdown and make the staff redundant with no discussion or engagement with the local community. Meanwhile, not a single swimming pool in Greenwich has been closed.

 

We the undersigned demand that Newcastle City Council takes back control of the West Denton Pool from GLL and works to identify funding to reopen the pool immediately. We believe that decisions about our local facilities should be made by people accountable to Newcastle voters not an unaccountable body based 300 miles away.
