  • Alcohol before the age of 18 - What's the harm?

    Thu 07 Jul 2022

Northumbria Police have asked the Local Authority to share of some up-to-date advice being provided for parents regarding the risks of the intake of alcohol before the age of 18.

By the age 11, children are becoming increasingly aware of alcohol, and many will have tried it by 15. So, it’s a topic parents and carers need to be able to talk about.

Families have a big influence on their children. Parents can help their children to avoid alcohol harms by learning about alcohol risks for young people, understanding the myths, talking to their children about alcohol, agreeing rules and by being good role models.

Children learn about alcohol in school, but this guide provides useful and reminds parents regarding the risks and support mechanisms in place.
We encourage you to view the attached link and share with parents of pupils.

  • Keeping Children Safe Online

    Mon 13 Jun 2022

What's new? Website for 4 to 7 Year Olds

The website is based on the three-episode Jessie & Friends animated series, which aims to equip 4-7 year olds with the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to stay safer online. It is intended to be used by 4-7 year olds alongside their parents and carers, or within education settings as a learning tool.

The new interactive website encourages 4-7s to engage safely online by helping them to recognise worrying, upsetting or scary situations and reinforcing the key message that they should ‘Tell A Grown Up’ in these instances.

The website is divided into sections for 4-5 and 6-7 year olds and features relevant and age-appropriate games for the chosen age bracket. Each game focuses on one of four topics:

    • watching videos
    • chatting online
    • sharing pictures
    • gaming online

The Jessie & Friends episodes are also available to watch on the new website to enhance understanding.

Take a look at the new website

    Parents and carers guide

The guide aims to support parents and carers in navigating the website alongside their child. It provides information on the background and purpose of the website, in addition to information about each of the games and conversation starters to use with children. The guide is available for you to download and share with parent and carer networks within your setting.

  • Eid and Ramadan

    Fri 29 Apr 2022

Enjoy this new, short film (https://youtu.be/Qwtj3KYv1UQ), which involves the Imam and members of Newcastle Central Mosque explaining the importance of Ramadan and Eid and the observances and customs – as well as the international communities that share the Islamic faith in the city.

There is a news item on International Newcastle’s website here https://internationalnewcastle.org.uk/ramadan-eid-newcastle and it has been posted on twitter, facebook and linked in pages.

Veena Soni has developed this project, which was commissioned by our partners at Durham International.  It is a very well made film and provides a real insight into our Muslim community and Ramadan and Eid. There will be a question and answer session at the mosque on Teams Live on 26th May with Veena and the Imam and Durham have kindly opened this up to our schools,

  • Government Update - Information for parents and carers on COVID-19 vaccination for at risk 5 to 11 year old children

    Tue 08 Mar 2022

Information for parents and carers on COVID-19 vaccination for at risk 5 to 11 year olds

Please share the following information with parents and carers of at risk 5 to 11 year olds.

Children aged 5 to 11 years who are in a clinical risk group or who live with someone who is immunosuppressed can get the COVID-19 vaccine, in line with advice set out by the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI). Eligible children include those with diabetes, immunosuppression, learning disabilities, and other conditions as outlined by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) in the Green Book.

Vaccinations help to increase protection against COVID-19, which is particularly important for those with underlying health conditions.

Further information is available in the guide for parents of children aged 5 to 11 years published by UKHSA. We have published some frequently asked questions on the vaccination programme including information on eligibility, accessibility and advice for parents of children at high risk from COVID-19. Following advice from the JCVI, healthy 5 to 11 year old children will also be offered two 10 microgram doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. The NHS will prepare to extend this non-urgent offer to all children during April.

  • COVID-19 - Government Guidance - 28-02-22

    Mon 28 Feb 2022

    Government Guidance - 28-02-22

    • No need to continue twice weekly testing (apart from special schools)
    • Please keep up the basic mitigations such as hand hygiene and regular cleaning
    • Those who feel ill or exhibit any of the main symptoms should stay at home and access a PCR (they are still available)
    • You should ask staff and pupils who are symptomatic to stay away from school whilst waiting for a PCR test, and if they test positive they should not be in school. Schools can insist on this, if not to do so risks spreading Covid in school (which, of course, it does). Return on day 5 after two negative tests is still fine.
    • No need to self-isolate as a close contact of a family member. But reasonable to ask staff to be careful and alert to symptoms.
  • Isolation Period- COVID-19 - 26-02-22

    Sat 26 Feb 2022

Changes to self-isolation and daily testing of close contacts

From Thursday 24 February, the Government will remove the legal requirement to self-isolate following a positive test. Adults and children who test positive will continue to be advised to stay at home and avoid contact with other people for at least 5 full days, and then continue to follow the guidance until they have received 2 negative test results on consecutive days. In addition, the Government will:

    • No longer ask fully vaccinated close contacts and those aged under 18 to test daily for 7 days, and remove the legal requirement for close contacts who are not fully vaccinated to self-isolate.
    • End self-isolation support payments, national funding for practical support and the medicine delivery service will no longer be available.
    • End routine contact tracing. Contacts will no longer be required to self-isolate or advised to take daily tests. Staff, children and young people should attend their education settings as usual. This includes staff who have been in close contact within their household, unless they are able to work from home.
    • End the legal obligation for individuals to tell their employers when they are required to self-isolate.
