‘A Stepping Stone into the Future’

Autumn A

Week 8

We’ve had a very busy, yet fun filled last week of the term with lots of activities including a Black History Workshop where the children enjoyed acting out parts of a poem based on Ruby Bridges. We’ve done lots of art too, including Viking knots and silhouette art ready for Remembrance Day. These will be displayed in our Remembrance Garden.

We’ve also been doing lots of maths and English centred around Halloween which the children have enjoyed. We’ve had our Halloween disco and have finally finished our class reading book Goodnight Mr Tom. We finished the week by watching the movie.

Week 7

We”ve had a fun week this week with Bushcraft on Wednesday, where we made ham and cheese toasties on the campfire. They were delicious, thank you Mrs McHatton. Then on Thursday we enjoyed a trip to the Great North Museum with a favourite being learning about the Egyptians. Please see the gallery below for photos from both these days. We’ve also been doing division in maths.

Week 6

We’ve been having fun in science this week, looking at chemical reactions between yeast mixed with other substances. Ask your child to explain the results and why it happened. We’ve included some photos in the gallery below.

It’s also been assessment week and the children have worked really well during this time.

Week 5

In maths this week we have been looking at long multiplication and really trying to cement in the method. In English we wrote a newspaper article based on the announcement of the Second World War and in science we have been looking at classification of plants and animals. You can see some of our science work in the gallery below and also some Viking shields we designed during our topic work on the Vikings.

Week 4

In maths, we have been looking at multiples and factors as well as squared and cubed numbers so lots of multiplication work. If your child is not confident with their times tables can you please encourage them at home to learn them. Thank you.

In English, we have been writing a persuasive letter to the Prime Minister based on our class book Goodnight Mr. Tom. We have also written some fantastic poems, again based on our class book, which we drafted on the iPads before writing them up neatly in our books. We have shared some of the poems below in the gallery.

Week 3

In History this week, we have been learning about Alfred the Great as you can see in our gallery. In maths we have continued with rounding numbers and in English we have been reading the next few chapters of our book Goodnight Mr. Tom.

Week 2

What a good week we’ve had. In English we have started our reading book called Goodnight Mr Tom and we have had some excellent pieces of writing from the children so far, including a diary entry. We also wrote a lovely descriptive piece on The Towers. In maths, we have been doing place value and have now moved on to rounding. We enjoyed street dance on Monday too.

Week 1
Welcome to our new Year 6 class

It's been lovely to meet you all as our new Year 6 class and we have had a great start already. It's great to see so many of you enthusiastic about maths and I've read some brilliant letters about the recipe for a perfect school year. In computing today, the children showed great resilience and enjoyed coding a game of SPLAT. Well done Year 6, if you continue with this great attitude, we'll have a fantastic year.
