WDPS First Aid

Our students learn  when to ring 999 and other skills like  how  to check a casualty through to giving CPR. This is 'Heartstart' inspired.

 

Phase 1

 

Session 1 The conscious casualty

  • Check for danger around the casualty
  • Check for response from the casualty
  • How to call for help

 

Session 2 The unconscious casualty

  • Check for danger around the casualty
  • Check for response from the casualty
  • How to call out
  • How to open an airway
  • How to check for normal breathing
  • How to place in the recovery position
  • How to call for help

 

 Phase 2

 

Session 3 The unconscious casualty

  • Check for danger around the casualty
  • Check for response from the casualty
  • How to call out
  • How to open an airway
  • How to check for normal breathing
  • How to place in the recovery position
  • How to call for help

 

Session 4 Serious bleeding

  • Check for danger
  • How to expose a wound
  • How to apply pressure to a wound
  • How to raise the injured part
  • How to lay the casualty down and keep them warm

 

 Phase 3

 

Session 5 Choking

  • How to recognise the signs of choking
  • How to encourage the casualty to cough
  • How to give up to five back blows
  • How to give up to five abdominal thrusts

 

Session 6 suspected heart attack

  • How to recognise the signs of a heart attack
  • How to make the casualty comfortable
  • How to call for help

 

Session 7 cardiac arrest (part one)

  • How to check for danger around the casualty
  • How to check for response
  • How to shout for help
  • How to open an airway and check for normal breathing
  • How call 999 or 112 and to ask at the location if there is an AED
  • To start CPR
  • How to give 30 chest compressions

 

Session 8 cardiac arrest (part two)

  • How to check for danger around the casualty
  • How to check for response
  • How to shout for help
  • How to open an airway and check for normal breathing
  • How call 999 or 112 and to ask at the location if there is an AED
  • To start CPR
  • How to give 30 chest compressions
  • Give two rescue breaths
  • How to alternate 30 chest compressions with 2 rescue breaths
