Art and Design Curriculum

Phase 1

• Children are taught use a range of materials creatively to design and make products
• Use drawing, painting and sculpture to develop and share their ideas, experiences and imagination. They will have the opportunity to take inspiration from the outdoors, such as the WDPS Bushcraft area and WDPS Allotment, for nature-inspired artworks, observational drawings and natural landscapes
• Develop a wide range of art and design techniques in using colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space

• Learn about the work of a range of artists, craft makers and designers, describing the differences and similarities between different practices and disciplines, and making links to their own work. They will begin to look at artists inspired by the natural world

Phase 2

• Children are taught to develop their techniques, including their control and their use of materials, with creativity, experimentation and an increasing awareness of different kinds of art, craft and design
• Create sketch books to record their observations and use them to review and revisit ideas
• Improve their mastery of art and design techniques, including drawing, painting and sculpture with a range of materials, such as pencil, charcoal, paint and clay. They will take inspiration from the outdoors, such as the WDPS Bushcraft area and WDPS Allotment, for nature-inspired artworks, observational drawings and natural landscapes
• Develop an awareness of great artists, architects and designers in history, including those whose works were inspired by nature

Phase 3

• Children are taught to further develop their techniques, including their control and their use of materials, with creativity, experimentation and an increasing awareness of different kinds of art, craft and design
• Create sketch books to record their observations and annotations,  practise techniques and use them to review and revisit ideas
• Improve their mastery of art and design techniques, including drawing, painting and sculpture with a wider range of materials, such as pencil, charcoal, paint and clay, as well as experiencing techniques such as batik, printing and silk painting. They will take inspiration from the outdoors, such as the WDPS Bushcraft area and WDPS Allotment, for nature-inspired artworks, observational drawings and natural landscapes
• Develop an awareness and understanding of great artists, architects and designers in history, and develop an appreciation of artists inspired by nature to create works of art
