🗳️ Democracy

At West Denton Primary School, democracy is woven throughout school life and our curriculum. We encourage all children to share their thoughts, ideas and opinions, and ensure that every pupil feels listened to, valued and respected. Children are taught to listen carefully to others, recognising that everyone has the right to be heard.

Pupils have regular opportunities to contribute to decision-making through class discussions, pupil voice activities, questionnaires and our School Council. They are actively involved in shaping aspects of school life and understand that their views can make a positive difference. The election of School Council representatives, as well as Head Boy and Head Girl, is carried out through a democratic voting process, helping children to develop an understanding of fairness, representation and the principles of democracy in action.

We teach children that their voice matters and that shared decision-making helps build a fair and respectful school community.

⚖️ The Rule of Law

At West Denton Primary School, the importance of rules and laws is consistently reinforced throughout daily school life. Our Golden Rules are at the heart of everything we do and help to create a safe, respectful and positive learning environment for all. In addition, each class works together to establish its own set of class rules, helping children to understand the importance of shared expectations and personal responsibility.

Through assemblies, lessons and everyday interactions, pupils learn the difference between right and wrong and develop an understanding of why rules and laws are needed. They are taught that laws help to keep people safe, protect individual rights and ensure fairness within communities. Children also learn about the responsibilities that come with living in a society governed by laws, as well as the consequences of choices and actions when rules are not followed. This helps them to develop respect for the rule of law and prepares them to become responsible and considerate citizens.

🕊️ Individual Liberty

At West Denton Primary School, we encourage our pupils to make informed choices and develop independence within a safe, nurturing and supportive environment. We believe that helping children to understand their rights and freedoms, alongside their responsibilities, is an important part of preparing them for life beyond primary school.

Through our curriculum, particularly in PSHE and online safety lessons, pupils learn how to make safe and positive choices, both in school and in the wider world. They are supported to understand personal freedoms and are given the knowledge and confidence to exercise these responsibly.

Throughout school life, children are provided with a range of opportunities to make decisions and take ownership of their learning. This may include selecting the level of challenge in activities, choosing how to present their work, or deciding which clubs, events and enrichment opportunities they would like to participate in. We encourage all pupils to show initiative, take responsibility for their actions and develop the confidence to make choices that have a positive impact on themselves and others.

At West Denton Primary School, our values are at the heart of everything we do. Our ethos, relationships and behaviour expectations are built around a set of core values, including respect, kindness, responsibility and resilience. These values underpin daily life in school and help to create a caring, inclusive and supportive community where everyone feels valued.

Respect is a key value that is taught and promoted throughout the curriculum, assemblies and wider school experiences. Pupils regularly take part in discussions and reflections about what respect means and how it can be demonstrated in their interactions with others, both within school and in the wider community. 

Our school values are shared with families through newsletters, our website and regular communication, ensuring a strong partnership between home and school. Staff consistently model respectful behaviour and positive relationships, while older pupils are encouraged to take on age-appropriate responsibilities and leadership roles that allow them to be positive role models for younger children.

Expectations around respect are reinforced through our behaviour culture, learning behaviours and daily routines.

🌍 Tolerance of Those With Different Faiths And Beliefs

At West Denton Primary School, our core value of respect promotes understanding, acceptance and tolerance of people from all backgrounds, faiths and beliefs. We are committed to helping our pupils develop an appreciation of the rich diversity within our local community, the United Kingdom and the wider world.

Pupils explore different faiths, cultures and traditions through Religious Education, PSHE, assemblies and a range of curriculum opportunities. They are encouraged to learn about and celebrate similarities and differences, developing respect for the beliefs and experiences of others. Special events, themed days and enrichment activities provide further opportunities for children to deepen their understanding of different cultures and communities.

Where possible, we welcome visitors into school and engage with the wider community to enhance pupils’ learning and provide meaningful real-life experiences. 

We aim to ensure that all pupils leave West Denton Primary School as respectful, open-minded and responsible citizens who value and celebrate diversity.
