At West Denton Primary School, diversity means recognising, respecting and celebrating the differences between people. We promote understanding of each other’s identities and encourage pupils to value what makes every individual unique. We celebrate diversity within our school and the wider community, giving pupils the knowledge and confidence they need to thrive in modern Britain..

Equality

We are proud to be a welcoming and inclusive school. Equality means that everyone can participate fully in school life and feel safe, respected and valued. This includes pupils, parents, carers, staff, governors and visitors. Everyone should have the opportunity to achieve their best possible outcomes as a result of their involvement in our school. Equality is woven through all aspects of school life and is the shared responsibility of our whole community.

Our approach is shaped by the Equality Act 2010, which protects individuals from discrimination. We teach children that we all belong together regardless of race, religion, sexuality, gender, ability or age. Protected Characteristics

We ensure that children learn about the protected characteristics in an age appropriate and meaningful way. This helps them develop respect, empathy and awareness of the needs and beliefs of others. By understanding these principles early, pupils gain the skills they need to thrive in later life and contribute positively to society.

Equality Objectives

Our equality objectives are reviewed every four years and help us meet the Public Sector Equality Duty.  Our current objectives are:

• Promote inclusive practice by ensuring that all pupils can access high quality teaching and learning.

• Strengthen representation across the curriculum so that children see themselves and others reflected positively.

• Reduce barriers for pupils with protected characteristics by improving participation, engagement and outcomes.

Public Sector Equality Duty in Practice

We meet the Public Sector Equality Duty by ensuring that our curriculum reflects a wide range of cultures, identities and experiences, and by monitoring pupil outcomes so that we can identify and reduce inequality.  We listen carefully to pupil voice through groups such as our Diversity Council, which helps us promote fairness and respect across the school.  We also review our policies to make sure they support inclusion and actively eliminate discrimination.

Diversity Council

Our Diversity Council plays an important role in helping us maintain a fair, inclusive and welcoming environment for everyone. They work across the school to promote equality, celebrate diversity and ensure that all voices are heard.  The council helps us understand the experiences of pupils and supports our work to build a school community where everyone feels valued.
