    Keeping Children Safe in Education

    At West Denton Primary School we are committed to keeping every child happy, healthy and safe. All staff and Governors receive regular training and understand their responsibilities in safeguarding. Our pupils are encouraged to speak openly about any worries and we have robust policies and procedures that underpin our safeguarding culture.

    Our Designated Safeguarding Lead and Deputy Safeguarding Leads oversee all safeguarding practice in school. They work closely with staff, families and external agencies to ensure concerns are responded to quickly and appropriately. Our Safeguarding Governor, Roy Bearpark, provides strategic oversight and challenge to ensure our systems remain rigorous and effective.

    We offer a secure and nurturing environment where children feel safe and supported. Their spiritual, moral and cultural development is strengthened through our whole school curriculum including Religious Education and PSHE. Our values, community partnerships and work with external agencies help pupils understand how to stay safe and seek help. Staff always follow up any concern raised by a child.

    Safe Recruitment

    We carefully check that all adults working with our pupils are suitable and safe. This includes DBS checks, references, identity checks and employment history. We maintain a Single Central Record which is regularly monitored.

    Visitors and volunteers are checked in line with safeguarding requirements before working with pupils. All visitors must read our Safeguarding Information Leaflet before signing in. Every adult on site wears an ID badge which identifies their level of access.

    Child Protection

    If the school has concerns that a child may be experiencing ill treatment, neglect or abuse, the Designated Safeguarding Lead may contact Children’s Services or other appropriate agencies. A referral is not an accusation. It is a request for further assessment to ensure a child is safe.

    Operation Encompass

    Operation Encompass is a partnership between police and education that supports children experiencing domestic abuse. When police attend an incident where children are present, the school’s Designated Safeguarding Lead receives a confidential notification before the next school day. This allows us to provide timely and appropriate support based on the needs of the child.

    Prevent

    Prevent is part of the Government’s Counter Terrorism Strategy. It aims to safeguard individuals who may be at risk of radicalisation or supporting terrorism. We work with pupils, families and external partners to promote resilience, critical thinking and safe decision making. For more information please see Newcastle City Council’s Prevent guidance.
