At West Denton Primary School, we recognise that the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development (SMSC) of our pupils is central to our vision of educating the whole child. SMSC underpins all areas of learning and plays a vital role in supporting children’s motivation, confidence and love of learning. We believe this development is most effective when it is reflected consistently through the values, attitudes and behaviour modelled by all staff across school.

Spiritual Development

Children are encouraged to explore beliefs and experiences, respect different values, develop a sense of self and deepen their understanding of the world around them. They use imagination, creativity and reflection in their learning and are supported to express curiosity, wonder and thoughtful ideas.

Moral Development

Children learn to recognise right and wrong, understand the consequences of their actions and explore moral and ethical issues. They are supported to express reasoned opinions, listen to others and make thoughtful choices that consider the feelings and needs of those around them.

Social Development

Children develop the social skills needed to work effectively with others in a range of situations. They learn how to resolve conflict appropriately, take responsibility for their actions and understand how communities and wider society function. We encourage cooperation, teamwork and respect for shared spaces and expectations.

Cultural Development

Children are supported to appreciate cultural influences, take part in a wide range of cultural experiences and develop respect, understanding and celebration of diversity in all its forms. They learn about different traditions, viewpoints and ways of life, both within our school community and beyond.

Embedding SMSC Across School Life

Through our curriculum and wider school experiences, we provide rich opportunities for pupils to explore and develop their own values, beliefs and spiritual awareness. We encourage children to show care and respect towards others, understand different social and cultural traditions and value the diversity and richness of cultures within our school and wider world.

This includes embedding the British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. These values are woven through our curriculum, assemblies, pupil leadership opportunities and everyday interactions.

We respect and explore the integrity and spirituality of pupils from all faith backgrounds, ensuring that a range of traditions and viewpoints are acknowledged and valued. Children are given opportunities to encounter alternative perspectives in a safe, supportive and inclusive environment.

Children are supported to understand the difference between right and wrong, particularly in relation to how their actions affect others. We help pupils understand the importance of rules and why they are necessary for the safety and wellbeing of everyone. School and classroom expectations are consistently reinforced, celebrated and used to promote positive behaviour, effort and achievement.
