At West Denton Primary School, our Religious Education curriculum is designed to support pupils in becoming respectful, thoughtful and inquisitive learners. The curriculum provides opportunities for children to explore a range of religions and worldviews, both within our local community and the wider world. Through this, pupils develop an understanding of different beliefs and learn to make connections with their own values.

Our teaching is based on the Newcastle Local Authority Agreed Syllabus for RE. We recognise and celebrate the diversity of religious and non-religious backgrounds within our school community, ensuring that all pupils feel respected, valued and included in their learning.

We understand the important role RE plays in pupils’ personal development, particularly in supporting their spiritual, moral, social and cultural understanding. We deliver a balanced curriculum that reflects the dual aims of RE within the agreed syllabus, supporting both knowledge and personal reflection.

The curriculum aims to ensure that all pupils:

• Develop knowledge and understanding of a range of religions and worldviews
• Express ideas and insights about the nature, significance and impact of different beliefs
• Develop the skills needed to engage thoughtfully and respectfully with religious and non-religious perspectives

Parents have the legal right to withdraw their child from all or part of Religious Education. Please contact school to discuss any requests so we can make appropriate arrangements for the supervision of pupils who are withdrawn from RE lessons.
