Our Approach

At West Denton Primary School, we want every child to feel confident and safe when using technology. We teach children how to make good choices online and how to talk to trusted adults when something does not feel right. This page gives parents simple, clear guidance to support online safety at home.

Online safety is taught throughout the year as part of computing, PSHE and everyday classroom practice.

What Children Learn in School

Children learn about kindness online, keeping personal information private and thinking carefully before clicking on links or messages. They also learn that online friends are not the same as real‑life friends and that they should always speak to an adult if something worries them.

Key themes include:

• Kind behaviour online

• Trusted adults

• How to report something that feels unsafe or upsetting

• Age‑appropriate use of apps, games and websites

🏡  How Parents Can Help at Home

You do not need to be a tech expert. Talking regularly with your child, setting simple family rules and checking privacy settings together all help children stay safe. Keeping devices in shared spaces also supports safer choices.

Parents often:

• Talk openly about online activities

• Set clear boundaries for games and apps

• Check privacy settings together

• Use parental controls on devices, consoles and apps

• Check age ratings before allowing new games or apps

🚨 If Something Worries You

If your child sees something upsetting or unsafe, stay calm and reassure them they are not in trouble. Close the screen if needed and let school know so we can help. Support is also available from Childline, CEOP and NSPCC.  These organisations offer confidential advice and reporting tools for children and families.
