Primary PE and Sport Premium

🏅 Primary PE and Sport Premium

The Primary PE and Sport Premium is government funding allocated to schools to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of physical education, physical activity and sport. At West Denton Primary School we believe that physical activity is fundamental to a child’s health, wellbeing and academic success. This funding allows us to develop a holistic PE curriculum that inspires all pupils to adopt active, healthy lifestyles.

🎯 Key Objectives of the Funding

Schools must use the funding to secure improvements against five key indicators set by the Department for Education. At West Denton Primary School we focus on:

  • Engagement — Encouraging all pupils to achieve at least 60 active minutes daily

  • Profile — Raising the profile of PE and sport across the whole school

  • Confidence — Increasing staff confidence, knowledge and skills in teaching PE

  • Variety — Offering a broader range of sports and physical activities to all pupils

  • Competition — Increasing participation in competitive sports and school games tournaments

These indicators guide how we plan, deliver and evaluate our PE and Sport Premium provision.

🏃 How We Use the Funding

The funding must create sustainable improvements that benefit future cohorts. We use our allocation to invest in long‑term initiatives that strengthen teaching, participation and whole‑school activity levels.

Our current priorities include:

  • Staff CPD — Specialist sports coaches work alongside class teachers to develop high‑quality PE teaching

  • New Equipment — Purchasing high‑quality resources to support curriculum PE, Outdoor Learning and cycling, including bikes, helmets, trail maintenance tools and multi‑sport equipment

  • Active Playtimes — Training playground leaders and providing lunchtime games equipment to reduce sedentary behaviour and promote active, structured play

  • Extracurricular Clubs — Expanding after‑school sports clubs and targeting less active pupils to increase participation

  • Tournament Transport — Funding transport and entry fees for local school sport partnerships and competitive leagues

  • Cycling Development — Maintaining and improving the West Denton Running and Mountain Bike Trail, supporting bike‑handling lessons and ensuring safe access to high‑quality cycling provision

  • Outdoor Physical Activity — Supporting outdoor physical activity through equipment that encourages movement, teamwork and resilience

These actions help us build a sustainable culture of physical activity across school and ensure that improvements benefit future cohorts.

🏊 Swimming and Water Safety Competency

Schools must publish swimming proficiency data for their Year 6 cohort before they leave for secondary school. At West Denton Primary School we provide targeted swimming lessons to ensure pupils meet national curriculum requirements.

Each year, we report the proportion of pupils who meet the required end of Key Stage 2 outcomes.

For the academic year 2025–26, our Year 6 outcomes are:

  • Swimming 25 metres59% of pupils can swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres.

  • Use of a range of strokes79% of pupils can use a range of strokes effectively, including front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke.

  • Safe self‑rescue59% of pupils can perform safe self‑rescue in different water‑based situations.

This information is reviewed and updated annually in accordance with statutory requirements.
