Outdoor Learning

Today’s children are growing up in an increasingly complex world and pressures can affect their mental health and wellbeing. At West Denton we use Outdoor Learning to help children develop confidence, resilience, self‑esteem, risk management skills, teamwork and critical thinking. Our approach gives children purposeful opportunities to connect with nature, regulate emotions and build positive coping strategies.

Edible Playground

Our Edible Playground gives every child the chance to experience the joy of planting, nurturing and harvesting their own produce. Children learn where food comes from and enjoy preparing and tasting fresh healthy ingredients they have helped to grow.

We have developed our own allotment beds and orchard which the children care for with enthusiasm and pride. These experiences help build healthy eating habits from an early age, support physical and mental wellbeing and encourage a lifelong love of the outdoors.

The Edible Playground also strengthens communication, teamwork and problem solving as children work together to plan, plant and look after their growing spaces. It provides hands‑on learning that supports our curriculum in science, PSHE and design technology.

On our Bikes!

We have invested heavily in cycling and created the West Denton Running and Mountain Bike Trail so that all children can develop fitness and essential bike‑handling skills throughout the year. Children receive cycling lessons on a rota basis during curriculum time and learn basic bike maintenance to help them become confident independent riders.

We also offer off‑site rides which build up to our Y5 and Y6 children completing multi‑day cycle tours in the summer term. These experiences promote resilience, determination and teamwork while giving children unforgettable memories of adventure and achievement.

Cycling at West Denton is designed to be inclusive, safe and progressive, allowing every child to build confidence at their own pace. Our programme supports physical development, mental wellbeing and a sense of personal accomplishment.
